Our Beginnings

In 1992 the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers (CADS) held their annual National Family Festival and Race Championships at Silver Star Mountain Resort. Having read about the event in the local newspaper, Donna Carter wondered why there was no local group to teach skiing to persons with disabilities on the mountain.

Donna and her friends then took the first steps to make Silver Star Mountain Resort accessible for all people with disabilities. Devotion to her disabled daughter Danielle motivated Donna to raise the funds necessary to purchase specialized equipment and coordinate lessons with CADS to train certified volunteer instructors. The North Okanagan Disabled Skiers Association was formed with Danielle and her great friend Shelley Hrynew as the first students.

The association's name was later changed to Silver Star Adaptive Snow Sports when snowboarding was incorporated into the program. The first annual Carter Classic Fundraising Race was held in 1996 after Donna retired from the Board.

In 2001, at the age of 24, Danielle passed away. Silver Star Adaptive Snow Sports now proudly holds the Carter Classic Memorial Dual Slalom race each year in memory of Danielle. Funds raised at this event benefit the Silver Star Adaptive Snow Sports program which provides services for all disabled people who come from around the world to ski or snowboard at Silver Star Mountain.
